Many second graders add only the ones place and forget the tens place, writing 23 + 14 = 37 instead of 37. Play a simple addition game during everyday moments: when setting the table, ask, 'We have 4 plates out and need 3 more—how many total?' or while cooking, 'The recipe needs 12 minutes in the oven and 8 minutes to cool—how long altogether?' Start with sums under 20 and use real objects your child can visualize.
