Counting is the foundation of all math learning, and at age 6-7, your child's brain is ready to make powerful connections between numbers and the world around them. When children count with accuracy and confidence, they're building the mental tools needed for addition, subtraction, and problem-solving later on. Grade 1 is the perfect time to strengthen one-to-one correspondence—the skill of touching each object once while saying one number—because it prevents skipping or double-counting that can cause confusion. Counting also helps children understand quantity, order, and patterns, skills that show up everywhere from organizing toys to sharing snacks fairly. Regular counting practice strengthens working memory and number sense, making math feel less like memorization and more like something that makes sense. When children can count reliably to 20 or beyond, they feel proud and ready to tackle bigger math challenges.
Many Grade 1 students count too quickly and skip touching each object, resulting in an incorrect total—this is called losing one-to-one correspondence. Others reverse or mix up number names (saying "fourteen" before "thirteen") or count the same object twice when items aren't arranged in a clear line. You'll notice these errors when the child counts a group of 5 items but says "7," or when they recount and get a different answer each time. Slowing down and physically moving items aside as they count helps prevent these common slips.
Create a counting routine during a daily activity your child already loves. For example, while snack time, have them count crackers or grapes before eating them, or count stairs as you climb up to bedtime. Use their hands to touch each item and say the number aloud—this builds that crucial one-to-one correspondence in a playful, natural way. Repetition in real moments, not just worksheets, is what makes counting stick for 6-year-olds.
