Common mistakes to watch for
Many Grade 1 students count from 1 every time instead of counting on from the larger number—so for 7 + 2, they count "1, 2, 3... 9" rather than starting at 7 and counting "8, 9." Others lose track of objects when using their fingers or physical items, miscounting the total. You'll notice these errors when the child takes much longer than needed or regularly gets answers that are off by one. Watch for hesitation when the number sentence is written versus when objects are shown; this tells you the child needs more concrete practice before abstract symbols.
