Addition is one of the foundational skills that helps first graders make sense of the world around them. At ages 6-7, children are naturally curious about combining things—whether it's stacking blocks, sharing snacks, or counting toys. When students practice addition, they're building number sense, which means understanding how quantities relate to each other and how they change. This skill strengthens their ability to think logically and solve simple problems they encounter every day. Addition also builds confidence in math; when a child realizes they can figure out "2 plus 3" on their own, it sparks pride and encourages them to tackle bigger challenges. These early addition experiences create neural pathways that support all future math learning, from subtraction to multiplication.
Many first graders count from "1" every time instead of counting on from the larger number—so for 5+2, they'll count "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7" rather than "5, 6, 7." Another common pattern is losing track while counting; they may skip a number or count the same number twice, leading to an incorrect answer. During snack time or meal prep, involve your child in simple addition with real food. Say, "You have 3 crackers and I'm giving you 2 more—how many do you have now?" Let them count out the crackers, combine them, and count the total themselves. This makes addition concrete and meaningful, and your child will naturally want to practice because it's tied to something they enjoy.
