Many Grade 2 students forget to regroup (or "borrow") when the ones digit in the top number is smaller than the ones digit being subtracted. Watch for students who consistently get problems like 30 − 15 wrong or who write answers that don't make sense (like 17 − 8 = 11). A quick check: cover the problem and ask your child to count backwards on their fingers or use blocks—if they can do it that way, they understand subtraction but just need practice with the regrouping step.
Play "store" or "restaurant" at home using real or pretend coins and dollar bills. Give your child a "budget" of 20 dollars, have them pick items priced between $1 and $8, and ask them to figure out how much money they'll have left. This puts subtraction into a meaningful context where the answer actually matters, and kids naturally want to check their work because they care about the result. Rotate who plays cashier and customer so your child practices both giving change and calculating their remaining funds.
