When children can quickly add within 20, they free up working memory to tackle word problems, measurement tasks, and even early multiplication concepts. Addition also appears constantly in real life: combining allowance, sharing snacks, keeping score in games, or counting Valentine's cards. By building automaticity with facts and understanding place value in two-digit addition, your second grader develops confidence and independence in problem-solving. This worksheet targets the specific skill of adding two-digit numbers with regrouping (carrying), which is often where students struggle because it requires holding multiple steps in mind simultaneously.
The most frequent error is forgetting to carry the ten when the ones column adds to 10 or more. For example, 17 + 15 becomes 22 instead of 32 because the student adds 7 + 5 = 12, writes down 2, but forgets to add the 1 ten to the tens column. You'll also see students regrouping when they don't need to, or writing the 1 in the wrong column. Watch for careless errors where a student rushes through the ones place, or reverses digits (writing 23 instead of 32).
Use real objects during snack time or play to cement regrouping. Give your child 18 crackers and ask them to add 14 more. Have them group the ones into piles of ten as they count together—they'll see the extra ten physically form right before their eyes. This concrete experience helps them understand that 8 + 4 ones makes a new group of ten, not just a mysterious "carrying" rule. Repeat with coins, blocks, or beads until the light bulb moment happens.
